Ever
wanted to undergo a series of treatment
that will make you look and feel
healthier, not to mention extend your life
expectancy?
This may sound like
either the medical breakthrough of the
century or a dodgy American commercial on
the Shopping Channel, but in fact it is a
new method of medical treatment for
Dubai
that has been 5,000 years in the making.
The Herbalplan
Ayurvedic Centre has recently opened its
doors at the Dimension Health &
Fitness Club in the Metropolitan Hotel and
has already been swamped with interest
from a
Dubai
public tired of conventional medicine.
With its seeds long
since sewn in Kerala, Ayurverda is set to
spread across the world with the
United Arab Emirates
one of the first countries to officially
recognise this ancient method of medicine.
“This extends the
facilities that we are able to offer at
the club and it is one of the few centres
of its kind in the city,” said Kamil
Karpowicz, Club Manager for the Dimension
Health & Fitness Club. “It has only
been open a short time but we have been
overwhelmed by the interest.”
The club has brought in
Dr. Sajjaya Kumar, a 31 year-old Keralite
who brings with him a highly qualified
team with many years of experience.
“My grandfather swore
by Ayurverda and introduced me to it an
early age,” said Dr Kumar. “I don’t
call it a system of medicine, I would
rather refer to it as a system of living
and healing.
“What we have
introduced to
Dubai
is a small part of Ayurverda and we hope
to introduce more and more aspects as time
goes on. Ayurverda is a fathomless ocean.
There are so many methods of treatments.
People are fed up with the current system
of medicine. None of our treatments have
side effects as they are all natural.”
“Modern medicine can
only be traced back to the 16th
Century but Ayurverda goes back thousands
of years and is still widely used in
India
.
I can see it becoming internationally
recognised within a few years.”
Ayurverda, which
literally translated means “the science
or knowledge of life”, is the
traditional holistic medical system of
India
.
Ayurverda teaches that mind, body and
spirit are intimately connected and
separating mind and spirit from the body
creates physical imbalance, which is the
first step in the disease process. It
naturally follows that reintegration is
the first step towards healing.
This Indian Medical
science originated around 2,000 BC,
although Dr Kumar believes it was probably
first used some 1,000 years before that.
It traces its routes back to the Atharva
Veda, one of the four ancient sacred books
of
India
,
considered to be the oldest known work of
Philosophy and Science. Over 700 hymns in
the Vedas - particularly the Atharva Veda
- refer to topics connected with Ayurveda.
Based on the principal
that disease is the natural end result of
living out of harmony with our
environment, Ayurverda views symptoms of
the disease as the body’s normal way of
communicating disharmony.
With this understanding
of disease, Ayurverda’s approach to
healing becomes obvious: to re-establish
harmony between self and environment and
create an optimal environment for health.
The individual’s
natural physique and biological tendencies
and reactions are studied before any form
of treatment is recommended. The
rejuvenation programme for each individual
is drawn out by the Ayurverdic physician
after a thorough evaluation.
Ayurverdic medications
are based purely on herbals. Most of these
herbs are collected from a forest where
they grow naturally in an unpolluted
environment. Herbs are also privately
farmed. Cultivated herbs can be used only
if they are organically grown.
The medical system
treats the body like the axle of a wheel
which is made strong and durable by
applying grease around it. The same can be
said of the body which becomes strong and
lubricated by application of oils. Based
upon individual body constitution special
oils are used to stimulate the lymphatic
system.
This assists in the
flow of nutrients in the body and toxins
from the cells. It prevents aging and has
a rejuvenating effect, leaving the patient
better able to endure fatigue and physical
exertion. It also induces sleep; improves
complexion and strength and prolongs life.
What’s available?
One-off treatments or packages of
treatments are available and while the
one-off packages produce incredible
immediate benefits, the advice from Dr
Kumar is that the best way to enjoy
Ayurveda is to take a package series of
treatments that can last up to a month.
The rejuvenation
programme proves popular and helps to slow
down the aging process. The programme
includes detoxification and the
rejuvenation of the body by herbal oils
and medicines which nourish the body
tissues. This therapy slows down the aging
process and is recommended for all ages
from 16-70. Major benefits include a
prolonged life span, improved memory and
intelligence, perfect health,
youthfulness, bright complexion and colour,
physical endurance and strong sense
organs.
Obviously such benefits
cannot be enjoyed overnight and Dr Kumar
says treatments are available over five,
seven, 14, 21 or 28 days.
The good news for
Dubai’s portly part of the population is
that Ayurveda is an ideal treatment for
losing weight. It concentrates on
balancing the fat metabolism and not
worrying about having to starve yourself
into slimming or exercise until you drop.
Balance is the key to Ayurveda’s way of
shedding the pounds with a therapy that is
tailor made to suit individual
constitutions.
Ayurveda’s unique
health programme includes Body Massage by
special herbal powders and internal herbal
tea. A complete natural way without
dieting or exercising. A three week course
can see as much as eight kilos shed and
can be noticed after as little as a week!
The Aphrodisiac Therapy
increases vigor and vitality and is
effective for impotence and sex hormone
disorders. This package includes a special
massage and detoxification with time
tested herbal formulas.
Special beauty Therapy
takes care of pimples, wrinkles, acne,
sagging skin and hair loss. Oil nourishes
and cleanses the tissues to return a
youthful glow to the complexion, soothing
wrinkles and enhancing beauty. The eye
care programme relieves tensions in the
eye which cause poor eye sight, pain and
fatigue.
Dubai can be a
stressful city when the work stacks up but
an effective and prominent series of
treatment can release the day-to-day
strain and stress. Bringing relaxation to
the body and mind, it calms the mood and
slows down the pace.
Finding that perfect
shape after giving birth can be a huge
problem for mothers but an effective
series of Ayurvedic massages can bring
back the perfect shape and strengthen the
abdominal and weak back muscles.
An overall Mental Well
Being treatment helps isolate the ego from
the body and mind through a series of
mental and physical exercises. This can
improve concentration and health and
attain peace of mind through special
treatments like “Dhara” and different
stages of training like self-purification,
body postures, control of senses and
meditation. During the programme, the
option to follow a regulated diet and
lifestyle lies with the patient. The
physician acts like an advisor leaving the
final decision to follow through to the
patient. Ayurveda does not advocate
against non-vegetarian food or alcohol.
But Dubai can now also
experience the healing touch of Ayurveda
for various ailments like arthritis,
asthma, allergic respiratory disorders,
diabetes, hypertension, spine and neck
problems, headache, gastrointestinal
disorders, depression… the list is
endless.
The treatment promises
a born again feeling and its ethics are
simple. Health is purity and disease is
impurity hence the treatment is
purification. Even from a curiosity point
of view, it’s worth a try. The cost of
the treatment varies from Dhs. 200 for an
individual session of 60 min. and could go
up to Dhs. 9100 for a full course of 28
days.
