Foundation’s goal is to support research and build community of academic
leaders in the region
Khalaf Ahmed Al Habtoor, Chairman of Al Habtoor Group, announced today that he
will make an unrestricted gift to the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical
Research. With this gift, Mr. Al Habtoor becomes a Founder Member of the Dubai
Harvard Foundation.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime
Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, was the original Founder Member. His initial gift
of US $13.6 million established the endowment of the Dubai Harvard Foundation
and provided crucial support to its efforts.
The Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research was created in 2006 to support
biomedical research and academic programs that will both advance new scientific
knowledge and create a regional community of leaders in science and medicine in
Dubai. The Foundation is raising $100 million to create a permanent endowment,
which will generate funds to sustain medical education, create scholarship and
fellowship programs, and develop research centers in life sciences. The
Foundation’s research programs will be implemented through the Harvard Medical
School Dubai Center Institute for Postgraduate Education & Research, which will
also develop collaborative scientific and medical research between regional
laboratories and Harvard Medical School.
“It is an honor to join the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research in its
endeavor to support cutting-edge biomedical research to benefit the people of
our region,” said Mr. Al Habtoor.
“We are sincerely grateful for this wonderful gift from Mr. Al Habtoor,” said
Robert L. Thurer, MD, Executive Director of the Foundation. “His strong
commitment to supporting science and education will be a great asset in
developing medical research and education in the Gulf Region.”
Thurer added that in recognition of the Mr. Khalaf Ahmed Al Habtoor’s generous
donation, the Simulation Center being developed for the Harvard Medical School
Dubai Center will be named the Khalaf Ahmed Al Habtoor Simulation Center.
Membership in the Foundation offers philanthropists the opportunity to drive
biomedical research in a number of critical disease areas, including cancer,
cardiovascular disease, and neurological disorders affecting children, among
others. Founder Members will also join the Foundation Council and take their
place alongside a small number of like-minded individuals who, along with His
Highness Sheikh Mohammed, will promote the Foundation’s vision of world-class
health care and research for Dubai and the region.
