Location


Al Bastakiya area is located at Bur Dubai and extends along the creek up to 300m with a depth of about 200m southwards over a surface area of 38,000 sq. m. The area construction dates back to 1890 and is considered of the most important historical quarters of Dubai old city. Adorned with historical one-floor and two-floor buildings, Al Bastakiya is very rich in its architectural structures such as barajeels, columns and their capitals, and wooden ornaments. Restoration and renovations works in the area started in 1996 with a master plan to rehabilitate the whole district and transforming it into a heritage showcase with museums, galleries, hotels, and bazaars.

Historical Buildings Section

The building was constructed by Mr. Mohammad Shareef Al Olama in 1930-1931 with a surface area of 663 sq. m. The building has two floors linked by three stone staircases around a central closed yard. Distinguished by its location overlooking the creek and its ornaments and barajeels, the building was restored in 1999 to host the HQ of Dubai Municipality’s Historical Buildings Department.

Gallery Majlis

The building was built by Mr. Mir Abdullah Amiri in 1930 over a surface area of 400 sq. m. It was restored and renovated in 2000 to be used as antiquities and paintings store. The building has many traditional architectural designs in addition to the main entry which is rich with ornaments.

Dar Al Nadwa

The building dates back to 1925. It was built by Mr. Abdul Rahman Mohammad Farooq on a surface area of 463 sq. m. One of the most outstanding historical buildings due to its traditional local architectural design, Dar Al Nadwa was restored in 2001 to house Heritage Awareness Section. Since then it has been central place to host lectures, symposiums and press conferences as well as arts displays.

XVA Hotel

The building was constructed by Mr. Ahmad Al Sidiqi in 1960 over a surface area of 358 sq. m. Consisting of two floors, the building has two entries and two wind towers. All its rooms overlook the central courtyards adorned with rich ornaments and traditional architectural components. It was restored in 2003 to be used as a hotel.

Sheikh Mohammed Center for Civilized Intercommunication Building

The building was constructed by Mr. Qasim Bin Abdullah Al Bastaki in 1944 over a surface area of 300 sq. m. It is a showcase of traditional architecture in Dubai. After restoration works in 2004, it has become the premises of Sheikh Mohammed Center for Civilized Intercommunication. Since then the building has transformed into arena for international understanding and communication among civilizations through different activities and events that serve this objective.




Bastakiya Nights Restaurant

The oldest building in Al Bastakiya, the building was constructed by Mr. Abdul Razaq Abdul Raheem Al Bastaki in 1895 over a surface area of 649 sq. m. It has two floors very rich with traditional architectural components in its doors, windows, oriels and ornaments with motifs from local environments. Overlooking the creek, the building was restored in 2004 to be used as restaurant.

Architectural Heritage Society

The building was constructed by Mr. Abdul qadir Abdul Rahman Al Rashidi in 1936 over a surface area of 184 sq. m. Its two floors are showcase of local traditional architecture. After its restoration in 2001, the building has been housing the Architectural Heritage Society whose objective is to maintain and protect the architectural heritage in the region.

Sahara Gate

The building was constructed by Mr. Mohammad Habib Al Haji in 1954 over a surface area of 310 sq. m. Its two floors are very rich with traditional designs adorning its doors, windows and ornaments. After restoration works in 2005, the building has been used a dedicated center for tourism, culture and heritage.
