A Vision of Progress
The beginning of December each year marks an occasion that we hold dear, namely the National Day of the United Arab Emirates. The 26th anniversary of the federation of our country is special for everyone in the Emirates because it celebrates the foundation upon which our future is being built. Since His Highness President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his brother His Highness the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum (may the mercy of God be bestowed upon him) first laid the foundations of the union in 1971, the achievement of national unity has gained strength year after year.
The government has worked in close harmony with the citizens of our country, and it is the success of this harmonious partnership which has generated the rapid development and modernisation of the UAE. This achievement of progress rooted in our traditions has gained the respect of the world.
Our economic and social development has benefited all of the emirates without exception. The partnership of the federation therefore has not been based on an alliance of mere temporary interest or for the benefit of only one party. This cooperation has thereby promoted the well-being and dignity of the citizens and residents of the nation, as well as securing the overwhelming support of these communities. The success constitutes an example to be emulated by our brothers in the Gulf region and in the Arab world in general.
The inspiration for this modernisation process has always been the vision for progress articulated by His Highness President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and His Highness the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. This vision has been translated into action at all levels of our society, and has transformed our nation in the period of twenty six short years into a modern society playing leading roles in international trade, finance and tourism. All of us enjoy the benefits of the tremendous investment in the most modern infrastructure, whether in the road system, power or telecommunications.
The most important focus of our leaders has always been the development of the human resources of our citizenry. Special efforts have been made to provide opportunities for the national youth to study for employment, whether in technology or finance or services. This is seen as an essential element in guaranteeing that those who will rule in the future are equipped with the skills necessary to lead.
H.H. Sheikh Zayed illuminated the path forward during the Silver Jubilee celebrations, "The generation of the fathers has lit the torch and has made the necessary sacrifices. It is now the task of the generation of the sons, the generation of the Federation, to rise up and shoulder the burden for the years ahead."
