They say ‘some things are just too good to be true’. However, Mitsubishi wants to dispel that widespread belief with its new eco sedan. The Japanese car giant recently introduced the Mitsubishi Attrage to the UAE market, courtesy of Al Habtoor Motors. The so-called ‘Global Compact Sedan’ is an ideal city car: it’s light, it’s nimble, it’s comfortable, and it boasts enviable fuel economy that equals any hybrid. Joanna Andrews puts it to the test.
The new Mitsubishi Attrage is based on the eco-friendly Mirage hatchback, which Mitsubishi introduced in 2013. It is the first eco-sedan to hit the market. It has the perfect balance of style, and fuel efficiency wrapped up in one affordable package.
Fuel Efficiency
The Attrage is built in Thailand and sold under the Eco-Car programme. It has an aerodynamic streamlined body with the drag coefficient rated at only 0.29. This compact sedan has a weight of just 915 kilograms - more than the Mirage - but with the same fuel consumption of 21 km/l (4.7 l/100 km). It’s fuel efficiency is pretty impressive, especially considering that the Attrage is not a hybrid vehicle. Under the hood all versions of the Mitsubishi Attrage are powered by the same 1.2-liter three-cylinder MIVEC engine developing 74 bhp (55 kW) and 100 Nm (74 lb-ft) of torque, helping return 21 km/l.
Affordability
The Attrage has a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox, depending on the model. There are three variants to choose from. The Attrage GL, which is only available with a manual transmission, has a starting price of AED 39,900. The mid-range Attrage GS goes for AED 40,900. Standard items found on the GS include the leather wrapped steering wheel, the digital automatic air conditioning, the keyless entry with push-start button or the remote boot release. The top of the range Attrage adds a touch of luxury with leather seats, double-din touch-screen audio head unit, rearview camera, LED daytime running lights, security window tinting, and full bodykit. It has a starting price of AED 42,900. Safety-wise, all three variants are equipped with dual SRS airbags, pre-tensioned seatbelts (driver & passenger), ABS brakes with EBD (electronic brake distribution).
It’s a comfortable city car, thanks to its light turning radius of 4.8 meters. The Attrage has a feeling of space and simplicity. It can sit five people comfortably. Cargo space in the truck stands at 450 liters - capable of accommodating three to four suitcases.
USP
This newcomer will certainly give its competitors a run for their money. It is a unique entry into this segment. Mitsubishi has one exceptional unique selling point in the Attrage - its outstanding fuel efficiency that will not only save the customer money but also help reduce damage to the environment.

It’s a competitive market, especially in the B-segment. But with a mileage of 21 km/l the Mitsubishi Attrage could well have the edge. The Attrage is an attractive choice for people looking for a comfortable and economical city car, and it could sway customers who are looking for and alternative to a hybrid.
